What is franchising?

What is franchising?

Franchising is a business model in which a company (the franchisor) allows an individual or company (the franchisee) to use its brand name, products, and business systems in exchange for a fee. The franchisee agrees to follow the franchisor’s established business practices and operating standards, and in return, the franchisor provides support and assistance to the franchisee in operating the business. This can include training, marketing, and access to proprietary systems and processes. Franchising is a way for a company to expand its reach and increase its market share, while also allowing individuals to start their own businesses and become their own boss.

Benefits of franchising

There are several potential benefits to franchising for both the franchisor and the franchisee:

  1. Reduced risk: As a franchisee, you are starting a business that has already been proven to be successful, which can reduce some of the risk involved in starting a new business from scratch.
  2. Established brand: When you become a franchisee, you are able to use the franchisor’s established brand, which can make it easier to attract customers.
  3. Training and support: Franchisees typically receive training and support from the franchisor, which can be helpful for those who are new to entrepreneurship.
  4. Proven business model: Franchisees can benefit from the franchisor’s proven business model and established systems and processes.
  5. Financing options: Franchisors may offer financing options to help franchisees get started, which can be especially helpful for those who don’t have a lot of capital to invest upfront.
  6. Marketing and advertising: Franchisees may also benefit from the franchisor’s marketing and advertising efforts, which can help to drive customers to the business.
  7. Buying power: Franchisees may be able to take advantage of the franchisor’s purchasing power to get better prices on supplies and other necessary items.
  8. Networking: Franchisees may also have the opportunity to network with other franchisees and learn from their experiences.

Types of franchisees

There are several types of franchisees:

  1. Single-unit franchisees: These franchisees own and operate a single franchise location.
  2. Multi-unit franchisees: These franchisees own and operate multiple franchise locations.
  3. Area developers: These franchisees have the exclusive rights to develop a certain territory and are responsible for selling franchises and helping to set up and support new franchisees in the area.
  4. Master franchisees: These franchisees have the rights to sub-franchise a territory and may also be responsible for providing support to local franchisees.
  5. Conversion franchisees: These franchisees are existing business owners who decide to convert their business into a franchise.
  6. Entrepreneurial franchisees: These franchisees are individuals who are starting a business for the first time and become franchisees in order to take advantage of the support and resources provided by the franchisor.
  7. Corporate franchisees: These franchisees are owned by a corporation and operate as a franchise.
  8. Absentee franchisees: These franchisees own a franchise but do not actively manage the day-to-day operations of the business. They may hire a manager or team to handle these tasks.

Master franchisees

  1. A master franchisee is a type of franchisee who has the exclusive rights to develop a certain territory and sell franchises within that territory. They may also be responsible for providing support to local franchisees and helping them to set up and operate their businesses.
  2. Master franchisees typically have a larger financial investment and a higher level of commitment compared to other types of franchisees. In exchange, they have the opportunity to earn higher profits and have more control over their business.
  3. As a master franchisee, you would be responsible for recruiting, training, and supporting other franchisees within your territory. You would also be responsible for promoting the franchise and representing the brand within your territory.
  4. In addition to the rights and responsibilities of a master franchisee, you may also be required to follow specific guidelines and procedures set by the franchisor. These may include requirements for marketing, sales, and operations.

Growth of franchising

  1. Franchising has grown significantly over the past several decades and is now a popular business model in many industries around the world. According to the International Franchise Association (IFA), there were approximately 759,000 franchise establishments in the United States in 2020, employing more than 8.6 million people. The IFA also estimates that franchising accounts for approximately $890 billion in economic output in the US.
  2. Franchising has grown in popularity due to its potential benefits for both the franchisor and the franchisee. Franchisors can expand their brand and market share more quickly and with less risk than they could on their own, while franchisees can start their own business with the support and resources of an established company.
  3. Franchising has also grown due to its adaptability to different industries and business models. Franchises can be found in a wide range of industries, including retail, food and hospitality, automotive, and home services.
  4. There are also different types of franchises, including home-based franchises, online franchises, and mobile franchises, which can be appealing to those who want to start a business but may not have a traditional storefront or may prefer to work from home.

Growth of franchising in India

Franchising has grown significantly in India in recent years. According to the Indian Brand Equity Foundation, the franchise industry in India was valued at around $53 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $100 billion by 2025.

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the growth of franchising in India, including:

  1. Increasing disposable incomes: As incomes have risen in India, people have more money to spend on goods and services, which has led to increased demand for franchises.
  2. Government support: The government has been supportive of the franchise industry in India, with initiatives such as the Franchising Facilitation Cell, which provides information and support to aspiring franchisees.
  3. Growing middle class: India has a growing middle class, which is more likely to have the disposable income and education needed to start a franchise.
  4. Increasing urbanization: As more people move to cities in India, there is a greater demand for goods and services, which has led to an increase in the number of franchises.
  5. Increasing foreign investment: There has been an increase in foreign investment in India, which has also contributed to the growth of the franchise industry.

Overall, the franchise industry in India is expected to continue to grow in the coming years as more people become interested in starting their own businesses and as the economy continues to expand

Art Classes Franchise

Art classes franchises offer opportunities for individuals to start their own business in the art education industry. These franchises typically provide a range of art classes, workshops, and camps for children and adults. As a franchisee, you would be responsible for managing and operating your own art classes business, following the established systems and processes of the franchisor.

There are several potential benefits to starting an art classes franchise, including:

  1. Established brand: As a franchisee, you would be able to use the franchisor’s established brand and reputation to attract customers.
  2. Training and support: Most art classes franchises provide training and support to their franchisees, which can be helpful for those who are new to entrepreneurship or the art education industry.
  3. Proven business model: Franchisors typically have a proven business model and established systems and processes in place, which can help franchisees get started and be successful.
  4. Marketing and advertising: Franchisees may also benefit from the franchisor’s marketing and advertising efforts, which can help to drive customers to the business.
  5. Buying power: Franchisees may be able to take advantage of the franchisor’s purchasing power to get better prices on supplies and other necessary items.
  6. Networking: Franchisees may also have the opportunity to network with other franchisees and learn from their experiences.

Future of Franchise Business

The future of the franchise business model looks bright. Franchising has proven to be a successful and popular way for companies to expand their reach and for individuals to start their own businesses. In the coming years, it is likely that the franchise industry will continue to grow and evolve.

One trend that is expected to continue is the growth of home-based and online franchises. With advances in technology, it is becoming easier for people to start and run businesses from home, and this trend is likely to continue in the coming years.

There is also expected to be an increase in the number of franchises in emerging markets, as more and more companies look to expand into these markets.

Overall, the franchise business model is likely to remain a popular choice for both established companies looking to expand and individuals looking to start their own businesses.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franchising is based on a marketing concept which can be adopted by an organization as a strategy for business expansion. Where implemented, a franchisor licenses its know-how, procedures, intellectual property, use of its business model, brand, and rights to sell its branded products and services to a franchisee. In return the franchisee pays certain fees and agrees to comply with certain obligations, typically set out in a Franchise Agreement.

The word “franchise” is of Anglo-French derivation—from franc, meaning free—and is used both as a noun and as a (transitive) verb.[1] For the franchisor, use of a franchise system is an alternative business growth strategy, compared to expansion through corporate owned outlets or “chain stores“. Adopting a franchise system business growth strategy for the sale and distribution of goods and services minimizes the franchisor’s capital investment and liability risk.

Franchising is not an equal partnership, especially due to the legal advantages the franchisor has over the franchisee. But under specific circumstances like transparency, favourable legal conditions, financial means and proper market research, franchising can be a vehicle of success for both franchisor and franchisee.

Thirty-six countries have laws that explicitly regulate franchising, with the majority of all other countries having laws which have a direct or indirect effect on franchising.[2] Franchising is also used as a foreign market entry mode.
